Joe South was one of those '60s artists who should have had a much bigger career, in my opinion. A terrific songwriter, his tunes were covered by genre-crossing artists to much radio and chart success (Lynn Anderson's version of Rose Garden, Deep Purple's take on Hush, Billy Joe Royal's smash hits Down in the Boondocks and I Knew You When, the Raiders' Birds of a Feather, etc.)/5().
